At reset, the W65C816S starts in "emulation mode", meaning it substantially behaves as a 65C02. In addition to the availability of 16 bit registers, the W65C816S features extended memory addressing to 24 bits, supporting up to 16 megabytes of random-access memory, an enhanced instruction set, and a 16 bit stack pointer, as well as several new electrical signals for improved system hardware management. The 65 in the part's designation comes from its 65C02 compatibility mode, and the 816 signifies that the MPU has selectable 8– and 16–bit register sizes. The 65C816 was the CPU for the Apple IIGS and in modified form, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Introduced in 1983, the W65C816S is an enhanced version of the WDC 65C02 8-bit MPU, itself a CMOS enhancement of the venerable MOS Technology 6502 NMOS MPU. * The official WDC part name is W65C816S.Mar 28, 2018Rockwell SemiconductorThe W65C816S (also 65C816 or 65816) is an 8/16-bit microprocessor (MPU) developed and sold by the Western Design Center (WDC). * Stack addressing for fully reentrant and recursive programming. * Maximum stack space is 64 KB when operating in native mode.

The Yellow LED is the E output from the 65C816 – On is Native mode, off is “Emulation” mode – which is how the ‘816 comes up at power on, so it can run all 6502 code at power up.The result was the 65C816, finished in March 1984, with samples provided to both Apple and Apr 23, 2012 Apple wanted an MPU that would be software compatible with the 6502 then in use in the Apple II but with the ability to address more memory, and to load and store 16 bit words. on a new version of the that would, among other things, have improved graphics and sound. (They essentially subtract the value following the compare instruction from the value in the register. These instructions, usually used with branch commands, compare one of the three registers with a value or memory. These instructions load an 8-bit or a 16-bit value into one of the three registers. They are divided into different categories.

It could have gone out with a higher clock and been a contender. There are approximately 91 opcodes in ASM. My impression is the Apple IIGS was deliberately handicapped by pressure of the Jobs/Mac partisans at Apple. A 65c816 with Jay Miner's Amiga/Lorraine chipset would have been a natural successor to the Atari 8-bit series.
